Cutting Manners of Diamond Tools – From the Cooling View

From the cooling point of view, diamond tools can be used in 3 cutting manners: dry cutting, wet cutting and immersion cutting. The 3 manners have their own characteristics and application ranges.

1) Dry Cutting: The equipment used in dry cutting is not very expensive, its cutting speed, however, is fairly fast. When the suitable or ideal coolant is hard to find, dry cutting is often adopted. Sometimes, when some difficult conditions are met, dry cutting also has to be used. Dry cutting is economical.

2) Wet Cutting: When wet cutting is used, a cooling circulatory system will be mounted on the machine, which can dissipate the heat generated in cutting. Wet cutting can get precise and good-looking cutting surface, and can avoid burning the workpiece, but its cutting efficiency is apparently lower than dry cutting, by about a half.

Normally, the coolant used in wet cutting is water mixed with some soluble oil and/or some chemical preservatives. A large amount of coolant should be poured on the workpiece to avoid uneven wear of the diamond tool. This uneven wear can influence the precision of the cutting surface.

3) Immersion Cutting: Strictly speaking, immersion cutting is a kind of wet cutting. This manner is to immerse the workpiece into the coolant to reach the best cooling effect. Immersion cutting can get a good process result on the whole cutting surface, and is normally used in the processing of metal products.
