When resin is used in diamond tools as the bond material, some approaches should be adopted to make it have below features:

1) Good Adhesion: Resin bond should be able to be distributed on the surface of diamonds evenly, and fix the diamonds firmly on the tool.

2) High Strength: Though resin has good adhesion, it has big fluidity, and is brittle and low-strength. So some kinds of filler materials should be added to improve its strength.

3) Proper Hardness: The hardness of resin bond should fit the speed of diamonds’ wear. If it is too soft, diamonds will fall off the tool without being properly utilized.

4) As High as Possible Heat Resistance: One weakness of resin is low heat-resistance. It is very important to choose some resin that has a relatively better heat-resistance property, and add some filler materials to improve its heat resistance.

5) High Grinding Efficiency and High Processing Finish.

6) The filler materials in the resin bond should be able to dissolve in acid or alkali, so that when the tool is no longer usable, the diamonds in it can be recycled.

Resin bonded diamond grinding tools are made by using diamonds as the abrasive and resin powder as the adhesive, and adding some proper fillers such as copper powder. After being prepared, mixed, hot-pressed to a certain shape, cured and machined, these materials can then be changed into final products. An example of resin bonded diamond grinding tool is the diamond polishing pads, which are used for polishing stone, concrete, glass, etc.

Resin bonded diamond grinding tools have following advantages:

Their grinding efficiency is high and self-sharpening capacity is good.

The temperature generated in their grinding procedure is low, and they are not subject to blocking. This can reduce the possibility of burning the workpiece.

They have good elasticity, which will help to improve the roughness of the workpiece’s surface. They are widely used in fine grinding, half-fine grinding, sharpening and polishing.

Their dressing is easy.

The processing objects of resin bonded diamond grinding tools include carbide alloy, glass, ceramic, stone, ferrite, semiconductor, electrical carbon products, refractories, etc.

As the resin bond’s hold strength to diamonds is normally not so strong, the diamonds’ utilization ratio is not high. Therefore non-high quality but large quantity diamonds can be used in the making of resin bonded diamond grinding tools.
