Wet or Dry Diamond Core Drill Bits

Diamond core drill bits can be either laser welded or silver brazed. Silver brazed diamond core drill bits can only be used in wet drilling. If they are used in dry drilling, their diamond segments may break off from their steel tube and may cause security issues.

Laser welded diamond core drill bits can be used in both wet drilling and dry drilling, and are now more popular. However, not all materials are suitable to be drilled dryly. If very hard materials, e.g., reinforced concrete, are drilled without water, the excessive heat generated may cause the diamonds on the core bit to become blunt, and then lead to poor drilling performance.

Dry drilling is usually applied when water is not available and the materials to be drilled are not very hard. The materials can include bricks, ceramic tiles, not-hard concrete, and lightly reinforced concrete. A vacuum suction is usually needed to control the dust when dry drilling is performed.

Wet drilling generally is good for diamond core bits, for with water cooling core bits can have longer lifespan. It can also help dust control. Normally, very hard materials like reinforced concrete should be drilled with water.

Laser welded diamond core bits for wet drilling and dry drilling are made different. The bond materials and the diamonds can be specially adjusted to fit the two different drillings respectively. This can make the core bits perform better in drilling speed and/or lifespan.
